How to build a self-care routine that works
- Self-care has multiple components, and you should aim to incorporate multiple aspects into your day. Self-care usually falls into the following categories.
| Physical | Mental | Social | Emotional | Spiritual |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eat healthy meals | Read a book | Connect with a loved one | Journaling | Meditation |
| Exercise | Solve a puzzle | Practice a hobby | Therapy | Go into nature |
| Get enough sleep | Play chess | Ask for help | Positive Affirmations | Practice your faith |
| Get “me” time | Go to a museum | Go on a date | Play | Listen to music that inspires you |
| Bubble Baths | Learn a new skill | Set boundaries | Create something | Watch a sunset |
- Find out what makes you feel centered- make a list of things that “fill your cup”
- Brainstorm how you can incorporate those things into your daily life. Where are the parts of your day where you need a boost? Where can you fit things in?
- Make small changes- they’re far more sustainable than large changes.
- Set realistic goals for incorporating it. Setting unrealistic goals makes us more likely to give up when we don’t meet them.
- After seven days, evaluate.
- Adjust and tweak your approach as you go.
